Verne didn't want to pay Hogan his share of merchandise sales because he figured Hogan would want the AWA belt. I mean who would say no to being world champion? However, Verne was short sighted and didn't realize making money was more important. When Hogan said no to the deal, he figured he still held all the cards and didn't foresee Mcmahon coming in. He was just so cheap, but everyone used the same tactics and no one knew about merchandising back then. By the time it was too late he could have retired a millionaire but out of stubborn pride wouldn't give up, and lost his home to imminent domain and lost most, if not all, his fortune. It's a cautionary tale.

I remember as a kid the AWA was the largest promotion in the world they had the biggest stars and had a large women's division Verne was so set in his ways

I was never a Hulk Hogan fan, but in this instance, I completely agreed with him. The fact that Verne Gagne wanted half of Hogan's money from his tours of Japan before he would give him a run with the Championship is mind-boggling.
